Calvin Smyre

Calvin Smyre is a business executive, former state legislator and community and national leader.

He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974 serving for 48 years. His tenure included serving as Administrative Floor Leader, the first African American in Georgia history to hold such a position. He was honored by the House with the title “Dean”. His distinguished legislative record includes authoring the legislation making Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday a state holiday, legislation creating the Georgia Dome, former home of the Atlanta Falcons and Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program in 1993.

He President Emeritus of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL). He is also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; 100 Black Men of America; Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity; the Boy Scouts of America and a life member of the NAACP and SCLC.

In June 2024, President Biden named Smyre to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board in the Office of The President.

Born in Columbus, Representative Smyre is a life-long member of Greater Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Columbus.
