Daniel E. Wathen

After twelve years of private practice, Chief Justice Daniel Wawthen was appointed and served as a Justice of the Maine Superior Court from 1978 through 1981. He was then appointed as an associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and served until 1982, at which point he was appointed as Chief Justice and served in that capacity until he retired at the end of 2001. He then rejoined the law firm of Pierce Atwood as of counsel and engaged in an active ADR practice throughout the United States, including Puerto Rico, together with a number of international assignments. Having fully retired from his legal career in 2022, he continues to serve on public and private boards and commissions. In 2024-25, he chaired a commission created by the Governor and Attorney General of Maine to investigate a mass shooting that occurred in Lewiston, Maine.
