E. James Burke

During the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association’s annual convention in June, E. James Burke, former chief justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court, was honored with the WTLA Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to Wyoming’s justice system.

After retiring from the bench on Oct. 8, 2018, Burke left behind an influential legacy marked by public service, innovation and advocacy for equal access to justice. Over the course of his career, which included nearly 14 years on the Supreme Court (including four years as chief justice) and several years as a district judge, Burke championed programs such as People’s Law School, the Access to Justice Commission and “You Be the Judge.” He was also a co-founder of the Ewing T. Kerr Inns of Court, fostering mentoring and professionalism.

In addition to his judicial service, Burke has a deep history with the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association. He served on the WTLA Board for many years and led the organization as president from 1980-81. He also represented Wyoming at the national level as governor for the American Association for Justice.

Burke received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the WTLA Awards Luncheon at their convention in Lander. WTLA President Mark Macy noted his integrity, leadership and commitment to enhancing public understanding of the legal system. Presenting the award, Macy remarked, “Justice Burke’s contributions continue to shape a fairer, more accessible justice system in Wyoming. His initiatives have touched countless lives and will carry forward his vision.”

In his acceptance remarks, Burke reflected on the value of civic engagement in the law: “Our democracy depends on an informed public and a court system that works. I’m honored to be recognized by WTLA for that commitment.” He also highlighted his years with WTLA and his wife Linda’s support.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor presented by WTLA, recognizing individuals whose careers have made a lasting impact on the pursuit of justice in Wyoming. Recently renamed the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Alan K. Simpson Lifetime Achievement Award, it pays tribute to Senator Simpson’s legacy and his role as one of WTLA’s founding members. This award now joins the long list of accolades Burke has earned throughout his distinguished career, including the Wyoming State Bar President’s Award, the Thomas G. Gorman Excellence in Professionalism Award and the Lehman Award for Judicial Excellence.
