Eric J. Magnuson

Eric Magnuson is a partner at Robins Kaplan LLP and head of the firm’s Appellate Practice Group. Having served as Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court from 2008-2010 and focusing almost exclusively in state and federal appellate courts, Eric is regarded as one of the most effective appellate lawyers in Minnesota and the 8th Circuit.

In more than 45 years of practice, he has handled hundreds of appeals in federal and state courts around the country involving a wide range of issues including the constitutionality of the public-school finance system, employment law, trust and probate matters, trade secrets, business contracts, corporate fraud, insurance law, torts, and professional liability.

Eric has served as an associate professor of law at William Mitchell College of Law and the University of St. Thomas School of Law and has taught at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. He is a Fellow and Past President of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, and the founding president of the Eighth Circuit Bar Association. His publications include Federal Appeals: Jurisdiction and Practice (Thomson Reuters), Minnesota Practice: Appellate Rules Annotated (Thomson Reuters), 8th Circuit Appellate Practice Manual (editor and contributing author) (Minnesota CLE) and The Art of Advocacy: Appeals (Matthew Bender), as well as more than 100 articles on appellate practice and advocacy.
